Perfectly placed for growing population

The Surf Coast is one of the country’s fastest growing regions thanks to its laid-back charm and immediate access to renowned beaches, combined with its close proximity to Melbourne.

In recent times Torquay and its surrounding townships have seen an influx of young families move to the area. The most recent Census data shows that Torquay and Jan Juc’s population increased by well over 50% in the 10 years to 2011.

The population of the Surf Coast Shire currently exceeds 30,000 and it is forecast that this will grow by 48% from 2015 to 2031, resulting in a population of almost 45,000.

In 2010, the then state government committed to providing a standalone secondary school based in Torquay, and in 2012 classes at Surf Coast Secondary College took place for the first time at a site in Grossmans Road (next to the primary school).

In 2015 and with more than 500 students, the school boasts start-of-the-art facilities that are adjacent to the Shire offices on the Surf Coast Highway in North Torquay. The College prides itself on providing its students with the knowledge, life skills and technical prowess required to succeed in a rapidly changing 21st century.

Local real estate agent Tim Carson said the ability for families to access quality education locally is a major string to the Surf Coast’s bow.

“Now that it boasts an excellent secondary school, which complements the existing primary schools, Torquay and the Surf Coast is an even more attractive destination for families wanting to make that move,” he said.

Principal Scott Diamond said the facilities available at the new location allow students and teachers to work and learn in ways not possible in most traditional school buildings.
